Curiosity and Self Expression with the A Family | Slice of Life Documentary Family Session in Sacramento

Meet G and E: Sound Therapist, Creative Spirit, Single Mom

I drove up to an adorable house in Sacramento for a 3-hour Slice of Life session and instantly knew I was about to have some fun!

Inside, I met G and her beautiful 4-year-old daughter, E.

Their home felt like a living scrapbook—every corner holding meaning, creativity, and heart. The house was filled with wonderful bits of personality, like a living scrapbook; every corner seemed to hold memories, creativity, and heart.

G is one of those people you feel instantly at ease with, someone you could talk to for hours. The more you know, the more you want to know. She’s a sound therapist and tarot reader (check her out here!), works for Intuit, and even supports nonprofits with Google Ads—all while single parenting. After being told she’d never be able to have kids, discovering she was pregnant felt like a total miracle. G now sees her role as a guide and facilitator in E’s life—someone who encourages curiosity, creativity, and presence.

G’s parenting philosophy was so evident in watching E. The whole morning was spent watching her creativity bloom as she engaged in pretend play, did creative art, independently moved from one thing to the next and confidently handled any task, all with a sparkle in her big beautiful eyes.

When I asked what a perfect day might look like for them, G said, “It’s hard to say since I am usually present, so I don’t tend to look back—but it would be nice to catch our laughs together, or her attitude, or the surprises throughout the day.” So that’s exactly what we did.

A Morning of Play, Creativity, and Flow

After arriving, we chatted briefly, then they simply got back to living: G building furniture, E diving into her own world of play.

The vibe of the day was beautifully go-with-the-flow. After G finished building furniture, E moved on to making art at her easel while G made smoothies. E headed outside to play, totally lost in an imaginary world while G tested her new electric tree trimmer nearby.

There was no script—just presence. These two have a rhythm, floating between solo creativity and moments of connection. One of my favorite quotes these last few years has been “Let go and let flow,” and man, these two were a living embodiment of that philosophy!

A Spontaneous Trip to the Park

Eventually, they decided to head out to their local park. E created game after game at the skate ramp while G joined in the play. At the playground, they enjoyed playing restaurant, using bark as food (gourmet park food at it’s finest 😉). There was so much laughter and freedom—no forced smiles, no instructions—just life unfolding.

Back Home for Projects, Music, and Trampoline Time

Back at home, G turned on some music and worked on a project in the garage while E jumped on the trampoline and continued her imaginative games. As the session wrapped, they danced together, jumped on the trampoline and snuggled amongst the balls.

Their rhythm of independence and connection felt like magic—two strong, creative individuals coming together again and again, each fully themselves.

The Photo That Says It All

One of my favorite photos from this session shows E in pajamas at 10:30 a.m., standing on an exercise machine while coloring. I loved how the jammies showed the lack of rush in their day, that even hours into the day beginning, there was no need to “get ready for the day”. The whiteboard felt so representative of that constant invitation to create.

And the wall? My favorite part. In many homes, wall scribbles are followed by discipline. But here, they coexist with intention and beauty. This felt like such a powerful representation of the values G is raising E with—authenticity, freedom, and acceptance.

Why Documentary Photography Was Right for Them

When I asked why she chose a documentary session, G told me,
“I have a four-year-old and she is a spontaneous kiddo and takes a bit to get comfortable, so I think a session where she has time to warm up will capture more of those moments.”

And that’s exactly what happened.
